Pictures from the competition will be used in Land of the Fanns marketing\, social media and website. \nSend us your photos from around the Land of the Fanns using water\, rivers\, lakes and marshes as your theme. \nSend your photo(s)\, which must be at least 1Mb in size\, along with a title\, brief description\, your name\, address\, telephone number\, the date and location of the photo to landofthefanns@thameschase.org.uk by 30 August 2019.  DEADLINE EXTENDED TO 8 SEPTEMBER. \n  \n \n  \n  \nThe Land of the Fanns is an intricate landscape\, full of surprises and ‘hidden gems’ which straddles the London – Essex boundary and encompasses significant parts of Havering\, Thurrock\, Barking & Dagenham and Brentwood. \nWe are looking for photographs which capture the essence of the area – the landscape\, heritage and the community. \nJudging Criteria \n\nComposition\nAtmosphere\nOriginality\n\n  \nEntry Rules  \n\nEntrants can submit up to 3 photos per round. Age to be advised if under 16.\nCopyright for all images will remain with the respective entrants.\nThe photographer should agree\, unconditionally\, that the photographs submitted may be exhibited and that the Land of the Fanns\, Heritage Lottery Fund and partners may reproduce any of the images for the purposes of promotion\, marketing\, discussion and education\, including publications\, postcards\, posters\, the internet\, etc.\nThe photographer will be credited for the use of their work.\nA statement must be issued to say that the entry is the photographer’s own work.\nEach entry must state when and where the photo was taken.\nPhotos can be black and white or colour.\nImages must be provided as a digital file initially\, at least 1Mb in size (if you have a newish phone or camera this should not be a concern). The Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) are highlighting the fascinating history\, archaeology and heritage of the area in a travelling exhibition on behalf of the Land of the Fanns Landscape Partnership Scheme. \nThis travelling exhibition is an exciting way of understanding how London once was; historically made up of fens\, forests and farms\, the exhibition highlights how it has developed over the centuries and how the area was significant for the creation of wealth; it’s strategic importance in the world wars and the link to the important trade routes to the Thames. It will show there is a great deal of heritage in the local landscape\, of which there are still remnants that people may not been aware of in their local area. You can even take part in a living history activity as part of the exhibition. \n

DESCRIPTION:Summer holidays activities 2019 – Moths and Butterflies \nButterflies are beautiful insects that populate our gardens\, meadows and green spaces throughout the summer.  Help us to carry out a butterfly count at the Thames Chase Forest Centre. \nMoths are often just as beautiful\, over 30 different moth species were identified at the recent BioBlitz at Thames Chase.  Come and see the variety of moths captured overnight. \nWe’re inviting you to join us on a journey of discovery to see how many fluttering friends we can spot around the site\, while also learning how to differentiate between similar species. \nHow many different species can we find? Be sure to bring any pictures of interesting species you may have seen in your gardens too. \nThursday 8th August\, 10am – 12 noon\nSuitable for children aged 4-10 years old. DESCRIPTION:Drawing workshop – Havering Country Park\nSunday 4th August\, 1.30 – 4.00 p.m. \nHavering Country Park is a large country park with a good mixture of grassland and woodland. It is formerly part of the estate of Havering Palace with Charles I being the last monarch to stay there in the 17th century. Of particular note is the impressive avenue of Wellingtonia trees (Giant Redwoods)\, which is one of only two plantations in the country. The park provides good links from both the urban environment and Havering-Atte-Bower village into the surrounding countryside. \nMeet in the car park\, Pinewood Road\, Havering-Atte-Bower. DESCRIPTION:The Land of the Fanns team in partnership with Discover ME invites intrepid explorers\, history buffs and the plain curious to board Daisy\, a vintage Route Master on Saturday 3 August to take a tour of the fascinating history hiding in plain sight in the Land of the Fanns. \nThe route starts at and returns to Valance House\, the 15th century moated manor house that is now a local history museum in Barking and Dagenham. Daisy’s route for the day takes in the following historic buildings: Queen Elizabeth Hunting Lodge\, Ilford Hospital Chapel\, Eastbury Manor House\, where the tour stops for lunch and finally Valence House Museum. \nThe bus tour must be pre-booked via Eventbrite as spaces are limited. The RMI is a national scheme for monitoring the health of rivers developed by the Riverfly Partnership. \nRMI sampling uses the presence and abundance of invertebrates in a sample to gauge the health of your river. DESCRIPTION:Land of the Fanns 100 Stories\nWalk 10: Rom/Beam River Walk\nLinear Walk\nTuesday 4th June 2019\, 11am-2pm \nBook a place here. \nIntroduction\nThis walk is part of the Land of the Fanns ‘Community Mapping – 100 Stories project’ led by Kinetika\, which\, with local communities\, will identify and celebrate 100 stories gathered in response to the Land of the Fanns landscape areas\, and make 100 silk flags using Kinetika’s batik silk painting process. The project will culminate in a 100 Stories Walking/Arts festival in Summer 2020. \nThe walk route has been devised by local volunteers to inspire stories\, memories and responses and during the walk we invite you to do any or all of the following \n\nEnjoy the walk\, meet people\, connect with Land of the Fanns and get to know the area if you are new to it\nThink about your personal connections to the landscape en route\nShare stories about the area\nCapture stories or themes through informal writing and drawing activities\nRecord the experience through taking photos on smart phones or cameras\n\nWalk description\nThe walk starts at Bretons Social Club where there will be an introduction to the Community Mapping project by Kinetika. The walk then begins by heading West over the footbridge across the Beam River into Beam Valley Park.  From there we’ll admire the Sustrans sculptures of Dagenham local celebrities\, then walk up through the park and over the railway footbridge into Eastbrookend Country Park.  We’ll take a loop across Crowfoot Marsh (via boardwalk) and have a look at the Slack (bird-watching) and will likely see some of the horses grazing around that area\, then go across to the Millennium Centre for tea-break and toilet-stop. \nAfter a break we’ll head East again past Hooks Hall Pond and have a quick detour into Black Poplar Wood (rare trees)\, then follow the river path North up to Grenfell Park\, talking about the Land of the Fanns River Rom Restoration Project on the way.   The walk will finish with a summary from Kinetika at the YMCA by Grenfell Park. \n\nRegistration for walk: 10:45 am\nWalk starts: 11:00am\nMeet: Bretons Social Club (The Manor House\, 411 Rainham Road\, Rainham\, Essex\, RM13 7LP)\nWalk ends: 2:00 pm\nEnds: YMCA by Grenfell Park (29 Rush Green Rd\, Dagenham\, Romford RM7 0PH)\n\n  \n\nDuration: 3 hours.\nDistance: 3 miles\nGrading: Easy/Moderate\nWalk leaders: Carol Edwards (LBBD Ranger)\n\nParking\nParking at Bretons and YMCA \nTrain stations\nTrain station at the start: Romford (RM1 1TU)\, Gidea Park (RM2 6BX) or Harold Wood (RM3 0DA) approximately 3 mile walk to Bedfords Park.\nThe nearest train station at the end of the walk: Harold Wood (RM3 0DA) approximately 0.7 mile walk from Harold Wood Cricket Club. \nBuses\nBus Route 365 goes from the YMCA at Grenfell Park back to Bretons. \nAccessibility\nThese walks are of different lengths and on different terrain. Passing the Zig Zag Bridge the walk continues to Oak and Ash Plantation where remnants of Belhus Manor House can be seen such as the Long Pond\, Belhus House Stench Pipe and Ice House.  The walk then loops back to Little Belhus\, passing Little Belhus House on the way.
