Look out for more drawing and writing workshops in the new year! \n\nWe are inviting local people and communities to identify and celebrate 100 Stories gathered in response to the different Landscape Character Areas within the Land of the Fanns area. \nDo you have a favourite memory\, story or personal connection to a space or place in the Land of the Fanns area? \nIf so\, come and share it in an informal and friendly story writing workshop with Ali Pretty\, Artistic Director of renowned arts organisation\, Kinetika\, on: \n\nStory Writing workshop – Thames Chase Forest Centre\nMonday 2nd December 2019\n2:00 – 4:30 p.m. \n\nKinetika is a Purfleet based arts organisation and we are working with Land of the Fanns to deliver a Community Mapping project.  \nWhat next? \nOnce you’ve written your story or captured your memory\, follow up with a fun and friendly Drawing Workshop to illustrate it.  \nThe drawing workshop is professionally led by Kinetika artist Jo Beal\, who will help you illustrate your story in a simplified and bold way\, so that it is suitable to work as a design for a silk flag. No previous drawing experience is necessary. The drawing workshop is on: \n\nIllustrate Your Story workshop – Thames Chase Forest Centre\nFriday 6th December 2019\n10:30am – 12:30 p.m.\n\nJo will provide pencils\, pens and paper. We aren’t using paint in these workshops. Bring some water and snacks as not all locations have refreshments available. \nIn 2020: \nIn March and April 2020 there will be creative workshops in film-making and participants will turn the drawings in to 100 silk flags using Kinetika’s batik process. The flags and the sharing of stories will form part of the celebratory Walking Arts Festival planned for May/June 2020. \nWe are collecting stories online too – so please spread the word and ask your friends and families to share their stories. SUMMARY:Thames Chase Guided Walk - Thorndon Country Park
DESCRIPTION:Join us for some fresh air and enjoy the outdoors on our guided walk around Thorndon Country Park. \nCircular Guided Walk from Thorndon Country Park South via Visitor Centre in North Park – 5 miles \nThe walk begins in Thorndon’s open parkland and passes the site of the Old Thorndon Hall\, up to the remains of the pigeon mound.  The pastures offer great views across the Thames valley and towards London.  The walk then continues through Thorndon North’s beautiful woodland.  There will be a brief stop at the Thorndon Park Visitor’s Centre for facilities and refreshments before returning to the South car park through varied woodland. \nMost of the walk is on paths\, but there are a few steep and muddy places so stout footwear is recommended. \n\n\n\nWhen\nSaturday 30th November 2019\n\n\nTime\n10am-12:30pm\n\n\nLocation\nThorndon Country Park South Car Park \n(Parking charges apply)\n\n\nCost\nDonations welcome (parking charges apply)\n\n\n\nThames Chase Guided Walks are in partnership with Land of the Fanns. \nRaising Funds for Thames Chase Trust (Charity Number: 1115627)

DESCRIPTION:Enter our drawing competition for amateur artists for your chance to win one of three prizes. Drawings from the competition will be used in Land of the Fanns marketing\, social media and website. \nDrawings will be judged in two categories: Adults and Young People (12+)\, Children (11 and below) \nSend us your drawings from around the Land of the Fanns using landscape and / or heritage as your theme. \nSend your drawing(s)\, along with a title\, brief description\, your name\, address\, telephone number and location of the drawing to landofthefanns@thameschase.org.uk by 30 November 2019. \n  \n \n  \n  \nThe Land of the Fanns is an intricate landscape\, full of surprises and ‘hidden gems’ which straddles the London – Essex boundary and encompasses significant parts of Havering\, Thurrock\, Barking & Dagenham and Brentwood. \nWe are looking for drawings which capture the essence of the area – the landscape\, heritage and the community. \n  \nEntry Rules  \n\nEntrants can submit up to 3 drawings per round. DESCRIPTION:Havering – Bedfords Park and Rise Park\nBedfords Park Walled Garden\, Romford\, RM4 1QL\nMonday 28 October and Tuesday 5 November \nIf you love your local environment and are interested in how the waterways can be improved for wildlife while reducing the risk of flooding\, sign up for our accredited 2-day training. \nThames21 are committed to enabling communities to care for and improve their local waterway. As part of our work to trial natural flood management interventions around London we are providing fully funded\, accredited training to local residents who are keen to learn about how natural flood management functions and to gain the practical skills and confidence to be River Keepers in their own area. \nOn Day 1 you will learn about different natural flood management methods and what type of locations they are suitable for. You will take part in a site visit with the Thames21 or local authority Natural Flood Management Officer for your area and gain experience in using the ‘Slow Flow Catcher App’ to assess locations and monitor natural flood management installations. \nOn Day 2 you will take part in building appropriate natural flood management installations such as woody leaky dams using local materials. You will learn about the process for getting permission from the local authority and Environment Agency to undertake this work and the health and safety considerations of working around watercourses. \nA short assignment accompanies each day of the course in order for you to practice data collection and consider the process for implementing natural flood management in your local area. \nBy the end of the course you will be able to talk to other people in your community about how natural flood management can be implemented in the local area and take part in monitoring its effectiveness at a local scale. \nClick here to sign up to this training programme.

SUMMARY:Community Mapping - Community Assets Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Community Mapping project will identify and celebrate 100 Stories gathered in response to the different Landscape Character Areas within the Land of the Fanns area. Alongside this\, an important part of the project aims to help participants identify local Community Assets and we are pleased to host a meeting on Saturday 26 October at Thames Chase Forest Centre\, 10.00 a.m. – 2.00 p.m. to hear from David Moynihan of Locality. \nLocality is a national charity and membership organisation that believes in the power of community. Their members are community organisations and they support them to be stronger and more successful. \nDavid will be running this workshop session to provide pathways and examples for communities to mobilise to provide stewardship and sustainability of community assets. He will highlight the steps\, tools\, challenges and opportunities and the support that is available to help communities. \nKinetika will also update you on the next phase of the Community Mapping project which involves a programme of dynamic film and audio training workshops\, led by Rosa Productions\, a further set of story-writing workshops\, followed by drawing workshops in November and January/February\, silk flag painting workshops in the spring and plans for the Arts/Walking Festival finale events in May and June 2020 – so lots to look forward to! \nPlease email jo@kinetika.co.uk to reserve your place.

DESCRIPTION:Visit our travelling archaeology exhibition at the Thames Chase apple day on 20 October. \nCome and discover the ‘hidden gems’ that make up your local landscape. The Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) are highlighting the fascinating history\, archaeology and heritage of the area in a travelling exhibition on behalf of the Land of the Fanns Landscape Partnership Scheme. \nThis travelling exhibition is an exciting way of understanding how London once was; historically made up of fens\, forests and farms\, the exhibition highlights how it has developed over the centuries and how the area was significant for the creation of wealth; it’s strategic importance in the world wars and the link to the important trade routes to the Thames. It will show there is a great deal of heritage in the local landscape\, of which there are still remnants that people may not been aware of in their local area. You can even take part in a living history activity as part of the exhibition. \n

DESCRIPTION:Would you like to get to know bats those mysterious fly-by-night creatures? \nWell you can. Enquire about joining Bat Buddies with Peter West\, contact details below.  \nWe host bat talks\, bat walks and look after bats by providing bat boxes.  \n  \nWe have an event coming up on Thursday 3rd October which is to check and clean out our bat boxes for 2020. \nWe have over 80 boxes to check for the presence of bats at Broadfields Farm and Bonnetts Wood. When we find one it has to be identified for species and sex\, weighed and its forearm measured. This requires careful handling for which one has to be licensed.and which you can learn to do with Bat Buddies. \nMore often than not there won’t be a bat at home\, then the boxes just need cleaning out particularly of blue tit nests. To dissuade the tits we have some bird boxes to put up alongside the bat boxes. This is a lot of work. It involves getting up ladders\, clearing undergrowth\, carrying stuff around and keeping records – a variety of tasks.  \nThe party will meet 9am at the visitor centre and work till 3pm. \nInterested then contact peterwest501@btinternet.com.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for our guided around Belhus. \nThe route will be about 4.5km taking 2.0 – 2.5 hours. \nGoing first across Aveley Road through Whitepost Woods\, which should start to be carpeted by fallen chestnuts then back to the visitors centre. \nFrom there we will go up the main path beside the recently coppiced and replanted woods and play area\, then left beside the first lake through Whitehall Woods. \nCrossing Green Lane 264 into the meadows and walking between the second fishing lake and the conservation lakes\, coming back to the top end of the first lake. \nFrom there we will enter the Little Brick Kiln Woods crossing Running Water into Brick Kiln Woods and across Belhus Chase. \nEntering Running Water Woods\, taking a path to the Memorial Garden\, then back through the woods to the visitors centre. \nThroughout the walk you’ll also learn about the history of Belhus Palace as well as the wildlife and management of the park. \nMeet at the car park at Belhus Woods Country Park\, Romford Road\, Aveley\, South Ockendon\, RM15 4XJ at 10.00am. \n\n\n\nDate\nSaturday 28th September 2019\n\n\nTime\n10am-12:30pm\n\n\nLocation\nBelhus Woods Country Park Car Park \n(Parking Charges Apply)\n\n\nCost\n£3 Donation\n\n\n\nThames Chase Guided Walks are in partnership with Land of the Fanns. \nRaising Funds for Thames Chase Trust (Charity Number: 1115627)

It will show there is a great deal of heritage in the local landscape\, of which there are still remnants that people may not been aware of in their local area. DESCRIPTION:Drawing workshop – Havering Country Park\nSunday 4th August\, 1.30 – 4.00 p.m. \nHavering Country Park is a large country park with a good mixture of grassland and woodland. It is formerly part of the estate of Havering Palace with Charles I being the last monarch to stay there in the 17th century. Of particular note is the impressive avenue of Wellingtonia trees (Giant Redwoods)\, which is one of only two plantations in the country. The park provides good links from both the urban environment and Havering-Atte-Bower village into the surrounding countryside. \nMeet in the car park\, Pinewood Road\, Havering-Atte-Bower. RM4 1PB. \nThe drawing workshops are led by professional artist Jo Beal\, who will provide top tips and techniques to help you reflect on and capture your experience of the locations and your personal connection to the landscape. DESCRIPTION:Drawing workshop – Haven Plotlands Museum TBC\nSunday 4th August\, 10.00 a.m. – 12.30 p.m. \nThe museum is located at the Essex Wildlife Trust Langdon Nature Reserve. The Haven Plotlands Museum is a 1930s bungalow and garden that shows what life was like for resident Plotlanders before the building of Basildon New Town. The houses were originally built as holiday homes by families (mainly from London) who bought individual plots. The Haven Museum\, the last remaining house\, has been owned by Essex Wildlife Trust since the 1980s. \nThe drawing workshops are led by professional artist Jo Beal\, who will provide top tips and techniques to help you reflect on and capture your experience of the locations and your personal connection to the landscape. DESCRIPTION:Drawing workshop – Warley Place Nature Reserve\nSaturday 3rd August\, 1.30 – 4.30 p.m. \nWithin short walking distance of St Mary’s Church\, Great Warley\, this 25-acre reserve is the site of a house and once famous Edwardian gardens belonging to Ellen Willmott. It is now maintained as a nature reserve by Essex Wildlife Trust. Please note there are no public facilities at the reserve. \nThe drawing workshops are led by professional artist Jo Beal\, who will provide top tips and techniques to help you reflect on and capture your experience of the locations and your personal connection to the landscape. SUMMARY:Discover ME Heritage Bus Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Land of the Fanns team in partnership with Discover ME invites intrepid explorers\, history buffs and the plain curious to board Daisy\, a vintage Route Master on Saturday 3 August to take a tour of the fascinating history hiding in plain sight in the Land of the Fanns. \nThe route starts at and returns to Valance House\, the 15th century moated manor house that is now a local history museum in Barking and Dagenham. Daisy’s route for the day takes in the following historic buildings: Queen Elizabeth Hunting Lodge\, Ilford Hospital Chapel\, Eastbury Manor House\, where the tour stops for lunch and finally Valence House Museum. \nThe bus tour must be pre-booked via Eventbrite as spaces are limited. Please visit:\nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/discover-me-heritage-bus-tour-tickets-64235654572 \nThe tour departs from Valence House Museum\, Becontree Road\, Barking and Dagenham at 10am and returns here at approximately 4pm.
