Equipment will be provided and we ask that you dress sensibly\, wear sturdy footwear and bring plenty of water and sunblock. \nDue to Covid-19 regulations there will be a limited number of spaces on this event\, you will need to pre-book your space by emailing: lily.mackie@thames21.org.uk. \nThe event time and location will be forwarded to volunteers on booking. The ‘Space to Connect’ funding will be used to deliver community workshops to locate and record local heritage sites and valued green spaces\, discuss how best to use them and give them better protection for the future. Space to Connect was launched in June 2019\, at the same time as Co-op’s Endangered Spaces campaign to protect\, support and improve 2\,000 community spaces by 2022. \nThe Land of the Fanns is one of 57 organisations across England to receive a grant from the £1.6 million partnership\, designed to help communities tackle loneliness by improving and protecting local spaces that bring people together. Space to Connect follows commitments made in the Government’s Civil Society and Loneliness Strategies\, published in 2018\, to help create sustainable community hubs and spaces where they are most needed. DESCRIPTION:Land of the Fanns have teamed up with MOLA to bring history alive via online webinars. \n \nThe Land of the Fanns\, with the help of MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology)\, is offering all budding archaeologists and historians a chance to learn from an expert\, find out more about the history across the local landscape and get crafty too. Two special FREE webinars on 26 October and 29 October\, for children aged 7 – 11years and their families will explore archaeology and the fascinating story of the past beneath our feet. \nThe first webinar on Monday 26th October at 2pm looks at Roman pottery and shows how to make salt dough pottery. Roman pottery kilns have been found across the Land of the Fanns in Thurrock\, Romford and Grays. \nThe second webinar on Thursday 29th October at 2pm\, is all about the Norman Conquest and its impact on the Land of the Fanns area. The medieval barn in Upminster is similar to Norman tithe barns and we will look at how to make a tithe barn money box. \n             \nMOLA’s travelling archaeology exhibition has been seen at several Land of the Fanns events in the past. DESCRIPTION:Are you a budding filmmaker? \nSend us your short film from around the Land of the Fanns  focusing on a local place that is special to you and tell us why. \nEnter our short film competition for amateur filmmakers for your chance to win one of three prizes in vouchers (1st prize £80\, 2nd prize £50\, 3rd prize £20). Films from the competition will be used in Land of the Fanns marketing\, social media and on the website. Films need to be under 2 minutes long and can be in whatever style you like. \nHave you discovered a hidden gem in your local area you may not have visited before lockdown.\nMaybe you’ve taken a regular walk to a local heritage building near your home.\nWhere ever your lockdown travels have been taking you\, we’d love to hear about it.\nAnd lets share our appreciation of what’s around us. \nFilms will be judged in two categories: \n\nAdults and Young People (12+)\nChildren (11 and below)\n\nSend your film(s)\, along with a title\, your name\, address\, telephone number and brief description of what/where your film is of to landofthefanns@thameschase.org.uk by 31 October 2020. \nThe Land of the Fanns is an intricate landscape\, full of surprises and ‘hidden gems’ which straddles the London – Essex boundary and encompasses significant parts of Havering\, Thurrock\, Barking & Dagenham and Brentwood. \nWe are looking for videos which capture the essence of the area – the landscape\, heritage and the community. Most of us now have a very high quality video camera in the form of a mobile phone. Use it (or dedicated camera equipment) to produce your own film. Just make sure it is no longer than 2 minutes in length. The competition is open to all ages and abilities. \nEntry Rules  \n\nEntrants can submit up to 3 films. Age to be advised if under 16.\nCopyright for all films will remain with the respective entrants.\nThe creator should agree\, unconditionally\, that the films submitted may be exhibited and that the Land of the Fanns\, National Lottery Heritage Fund and partners may reproduce any of the films for the purposes of promotion\, marketing\, discussion and education\, including publications\, postcards\, posters\, website\, social media\, etc.\nThe creator is credited for the use of their work.\nA statement must be issued to say that the entry is the creator’s own work.\nEach entry must state when and where the film was taken.\nFilms must be provided as a digital file\, as mp4 and sent as an attachment to landofthefanns@thameschase.org.uk.  If the file is too large to be sent over email\, files up to 2gb can be sent via WeTransfer: wetransfer.com\nYour film must NOT be in breach of any copyright\, including music or sound used in your film. SUMMARY:Exploring Trading Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:Many community organisations are beginning to explore the possibility of earning some of their income through trading.  This workshop will help you to identify if this is something you wish to develop. \nNOTE: This training takes place over two morning sessions – Wednesday 11 and Wednesday 18 November 10am-12noon. You must attend both parts to complete the training. \nTrading can mean generating income from different sources\, for example: \n• Charging an entrance fee or membership \n• Selling produce \n• Providing training \n• Renting space or facilities to other groups \n• Supporting disadvantaged people to become volunteers \nThis doesn’t mean that you have to directly charge the people who benefit from your project and it doesn’t have to replace any money that you obtain from grant funding. \nThis session will help you to think differently about what you can offer individuals and organisations in your area and who might value your offer enough to pay for it. It will also help you to identify what you need to do in order to make a surplus – to generate more money than it costs you to provide your product or service. You can use this money to support your other activities and provide additional social and environmental benefits. \nThe training will be informal and will include lots of suitable examples of organisations that have already developed trading opportunities. It will be free of business jargon and give you the knowledge to decide whether this is part of your future planning. \nThis workshop will be delivered by Social Enterprise East of England\, a member organisation that promotes and supports organisations that trade for social purpose. \nIf you decide to develop trading opportunities then the Land of the Fanns project will provide some specialist\, one to one support to take the first steps. \nTo book click here.

DESCRIPTION:***The event has been postponed until the new year*** \nThames21 and partners Land of the Fanns have been installing Natural Flood Management (NFM) features on Rise Park Stream in Bedfords Park\, Havering. This innovative NFM project is designed to reduce flood risk downstream and is also contributing to national flood management data\, by building a series of leaky dams. \nHelp maintain current leaky dam structures\, and clear vegetation to prepare to build new tree trunk dams in the new year. \nMeeting point: Bedfords Park car park.\nSunday 13th December 10am – 1pm\, please arrive 10mins early to change into wellies \nTo book: https://www.thames21.org.uk/event/bedfords-park-nfm-maintence-and-vegetation-management/ \nEveryone welcome but booking is essential due to limited places.\nPlease come prepared for the day i.e. waterproofs\, sun block\, and wear sensible clothing that you don’t mind getting a bit muddy.\nWe are unable to provide refreshments due to covid\, so please provide your own refreshments.\nWellies\, gloves & tools will be provided.\nFace masks are not compulsory\, but we do encourage all volunteers to wear face masks if they are able.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Community-based Natural Flood Management – online training
DESCRIPTION:Thames21 have been installing Natural Flood Management (NFM) features in four areas around London\, Enfield\, Harrow\, Hillingdon and Havering. DESCRIPTION:0Are you a budding builder?  \nShow off your engineering and creative skills by building a local place in the Land of the Fanns that is special to you with items from inside your home. \nEnter our competition by submitting a photo of your model building for your chance to win one of three prizes. \nThe models can be built from anything you can find in your home\, building blocks\, paper\, crafts\, recycling etc. The model can be of your favourite building\, landscape or hidden gem in your local area. \nExamples from a member of the Land of the Fanns team: \n \nHave you discovered a hidden gem in your local area you may not have visited before lockdown.\nMaybe you’ve taken a regular walk to a local heritage building near your home.\nWhere ever your lockdown travels have been taking you\, we’d love to see it.\nAnd lets share our appreciation of what’s around us. \nThe models will be judged in two categories: \n\nAdults and Young People (12+)\nChildren (11 and below)\n\nSend your photo of your model\, along with a title\, your name\, address\, telephone number and brief description of what/where your model is of to landofthefanns@thameschase.org.uk by Monday 15th March 2021. \nThe Land of the Fanns is an intricate landscape\, full of surprises and ‘hidden gems’ which straddles the London – Essex boundary and encompasses significant parts of Havering\, Thurrock\, Barking & Dagenham and Brentwood. We are looking for models which capture the essence of the area – the landscape\, heritage and the community. \nEntry Rules  \n\nEntrants can submit up to 3 models. DESCRIPTION:Tales of the Fanns Walk 1: Thames Chase Forest Centre and Broadfields\nCircular Walk\, Saturday 22 May\, 10.30am-1.00pm \nThe walk starts at Thames Chase Forest Centre where there will be an introduction to the Tales of the Fanns festival by Ali Pretty\, Kinetika and the Land of the Fanns team and an exciting announcement about our new book; Fens\, Forests and Fields. The walk will be circular in and around the Broadfields site. \nAt the end of the walk there will be a chance for everyone to make their own bird feeder and to reflect on their hopes and wishes for the future of our landscape. Some are mainly on footpaths\, and others mainly on footpaths where ground may be uneven. This walk is not suitable for wheelchairs. \nPlease note: \nYou need to choose walks within your capabilities; the walk leaders are experienced but must take your word that you are sufficiently fit for the grade of walk you have chosen. \nPlease ensure you have a face mask with you. Whilst this walk is outside there may be times when you are in close proximity of others or need to use the facilities where a face mask will be required. \nWalk leaders will be at the start of the walk regardless of the weather. In the unlikely event of any unforeseen circumstances\, Land of the Fanns reserve the right to change or cancel a walk and/or performance. If you do not give consent to be photographed or filmed please let a member of the team know on the day. \nParticipants under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. \nAbout the Tales of the Fanns\, A Walking and Arts Festival \nThe Tales of the Fanns festival is a celebration of the Community Mapping Project which began in 2019 with arts organisation Kinetika. The project gathered 100 stories\, to tell the history and celebrate the people and places of the area\, from people living across the Land of the Fanns through drawing\, creative writing\, filming\, photography and walking. From those stories illustrations were created to adorn 100 hand painted silk flags. This project culminates in the Tales of the Fanns Arts and Walking Festival\, Saturday 22nd May – Sunday 6th June\, which celebrates the uniqueness of the Land of the Fanns. The route from Davy Down follows the Mardyke Way until it cuts across the fen to Bulphan Church and village. The woodland gives way to the flat fenland which is arable farmland and also the proposed route of the Lower Thames Crossing. \nThe walk will finish with tea and cake\, and a summary of the day from the team\, at Bulphan Village Hall and a chance for everyone to reflect on their hopes and wishes for the future of our landscape. These hopes and wishes will be written or drawn so we can hang them on the wishing tree at Langdon Hills Country Park on the festival finale day\, Sunday 6 June. DESCRIPTION:‘Congratulations – you’ve been awarded funding to deliver your project! But wait – you’re being asked to monitor and evaluate it too? During this training session\, we’ll discuss how to plan and measure your project impact proportionately. Done well\, you will generate the ‘stats’ and ‘stories’ and evidence to wow your funder – and build the case for your next project! \nThis training will be led by Scott Sullivan. Based in South Essex\, Scott specialises in developing\, delivering and evaluating heritage\, environment and arts/culture place-based projects. Since 2015\, he has raised in excess of £7.5 million to help better connect people to place. He is a Chartered Town Planner able to provide qualified advice that gets the best from the planning process\, coupling this professional background with extensive experience in securing funding as a certified Fundraiser. \nMeasuring Impact – the stories\, takes place on 10 June 2021. \nThis training takes place as part of Land of the Fanns Landscape Champions of Tomorrow. These hopes and wishes will be written or drawn so we can hang them on the wishing tree at Langdon Hills Country Park on the festival finale day\, Sunday 6 June. \nRegistration for walk: 10.15am \nWalk starts: 10.30am \nMeet: Public car park All Saints Church\, Beacon Centre\, Drake Road \nWalk ends: 12.30pm \nEnds: \nDuration: 2 hours \nDistance: 4 miles \nGrading: Moderate \nWalk leader: Lesley Robinson \nParking Beacon Centre\, at the side of the Beacon Centre or in the closed Essex Wildlife Centre car park \nAccessibility These walks are of different lengths and on different terrain. Some are mainly on footpaths\, and others mainly on footpaths where ground may be uneven. This walk is not pushchair or wheelchair accessible as it involves steps. \nPlease note: \nYou need to choose walks within your capabilities; the walk leaders are experienced but must take your word that you are sufficiently fit for the grade of walk you have chosen. \nPlease ensure you have a face mask with you. Whilst this walk is outside there may be times when you are in close proximity of others or need to use the facilities where a face mask will be required. \nWalk leaders will be at the start of the walk regardless of the weather. In the unlikely event of any unforeseen circumstances\, Land of the Fanns reserve the right to change or cancel a walk and/or performance. The weather can be unpredictable so bring waterproof clothing and/or sun hats and sunscreen – it’s best to be prepared for everything! \nWalking boots/shoes are recommended\, but otherwise please wear suitable and comfortable footwear – best to leave open-toe sandals or high heels at home. \nMake sure you bring a packed lunch\, if necessary\, and plenty to drink. \nDue care has been exercised in organising the walks\, however Land of the Fanns\, the funders and associated partners of the project cannot accept liability for loss\, accident or injury caused to any person following the routes. \nWe will be taking photographs and video of this event to promote and celebrate the project in print and online. If you do not give consent to be photographed or filmed please let a member of the team know on the day. \nParticipants under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. \nAbout the Tales of the Fanns\, A Walking and Arts Festival \nThe Tales of the Fanns festival is a celebration of the Community Mapping Project which began in 2019 with arts organisation Kinetika. The project gathered 100 stories\, to tell the history and celebrate the people and places of the area\, from people living across the Land of the Fanns through drawing\, creative writing\, filming\, photography and walking. From those stories illustrations were created to adorn 100 hand painted silk flags. This project culminates in the Tales of the Fanns Arts and Walking Festival\, Saturday 22nd May – Sunday 6th June\, which celebrates the uniqueness of the Land of the Fanns.
