DESCRIPTION:Land of the Fanns Finale: Langdon Hills\nCircular Walk\, Sunday 6 June \nJoin us for the finale of the Land of the Fanns Walking and Arts festival where you will embark on an adventure as characters and figures from history entertain you along your woodland walk. Meet the fictitious woodsman\, the lively Mrs May and even an informative kingfisher as you’re immersed in history as you twist and turn through Langdon Hills. The walk will culminate in seeing the 100 Land of the Fanns flags made by Kinetika displayed in this beautiful location. The walk is 1.6 miles and will feature 10 stops along the route including character performances by internationally renowned Coco Loco and a visit to The Pollarded Oak\, with a talk from the local rangers. \nYou will be in a group of 30 with 2 walking guides. The walk is outside and will adhere to social distancing. Please bring a face covering for use in public toilets. The route is not suitable for wheelchairs\, however an alternative route will also feature\, please get in touch (landofthefanns@thameschase.org.uk) to find out more. The project gathered 100 stories\, to tell the history and celebrate the people and places of the area\, from people living across the Land of the Fanns through drawing\, creative writing\, filming\, photography and walking. From those stories illustrations were created to adorn 100 hand painted silk flags. This project culminates in the Tales of the Fanns Arts and Walking Festival\, Saturday 22nd May – Sunday 6th June\, which celebrates the uniqueness of the Land of the Fanns. DESCRIPTION:  \n\nYour River Rom Needs You!\n\n\n\nJoin Thames21 and Land of the Fanns and help remove a very invasive plant\, Himalayan Balsam\, from your local waterway\, the River Rom. \nHimalayan Balsam takes over the riverbanks\, not allowing other species to grow. By helping remove the Himalayan Balsam you will help the health of the River Rom by: \n1. Increasing biodiversity allowing other native plants to grow; \n2. Decreasing soil erosion. Himalayan Balsam is an annual plant which dies back during the autumn. Consequently\, due to its shallow roots\, a large amount of soil erodes into the water and becomes silt. \nThis event is part of the Land of the Fanns\, a programme to undo some of the damage caused by decades of human intervention on an old fen landscape encompassing the London boundary and South Essex. \nAnyone of any age can join\, no experience and no equipment necessary! Empowering communities to upskill and take ownership of their local heritage and green spaces. \nIf you run a place that people visit\, such as an historic house\, a nature reserve or a country park\, and need help understanding your existing or potential visitors\, these workshops are for you.  \nMaybe you would like more people to visit\, or your existing visitors to come more often. Possibly you now have different types of visitors form pre-Covid and are trying to work out how to respond. This workshop is designed to help you work on your own situation and come up with bespoke solutions. \nWe will start with a tried and tested visitor segmentation model to focus on what motivates people to visit places like yours. This highlights four key motivations which are a great tool for understanding the different reasons people do\, or do not\, visit you. DESCRIPTION:Please sign up for your ticket to attend an online RMI theory training session here. You only need to attend one session\, but must be able to attend in full at the time stated. \nThe Zoological Society of London (ZSL) and project partners across London are offering training in the Riverfly Monitoring Initiative (RMI). The RMI is a national scheme for monitoring the health of rivers\, developed by the Riverfly Partnership. It gives trained volunteers the tools to detect and report pollution events\, builds essential long-term datasets on the health of rivers and links volunteers with other organisations working to improve our rivers. \nThe full training this year is in two parts\, an online theory session is mandatory before attending a practical session at a river. \nThe online theory training sessions are on: \n\nThursday 5 August at 16:00 – 19:00\nThursday 12 August at 16:00 – 19:00\n\nRMI sampling uses the presence and abundance of invertebrates in a sample to gauge the health of your river. DESCRIPTION:YOU CAN HELP SAVE OUR WATER VOLE \nARKive-video-474E7FB2-597A-497F-93E5-B26B14038488 \nHere he is\, a water vole washing his face. His story is not all wind-in-the willows. What have we ever done for him? We cut down the vegetation\, his cover and food supply\, blocked his streams. And to cap it all kept mink in fur farms to supply coats: great idea until they were released or escaped in the 1950s to pillage out native wild life. with alarming efficiency. They live and hunt near water and can swim well\, resulting in them becoming the main predator of the water vole. One female mink can penetrate a water vole burrow with catastrophic consequences\, wiping out whole colonies in one fell swoop. Previously\, water voles could escape from their predators (weasels and stoats) by swimming. In England we lost 95% of our water vole by the year 2000. But there is something you can do to save our water vole which we still have on our river the Ingrebourne and nearby. This is done by using mink monitoring rafts to establish if mink are present in an area then once detected mink are trapped and humanely dispatched. This we have to do as well as take more care of the river environment. We are the Havering Wildlife Project and are running three workdays to train people in an East Anglian pilot scheme for nationwide watervole conservation. \nOn our workday you will: be shown how to set up and look after a mink raft\, insert the new smart trap\, move and launch the raft\, operate the remote sensor and go through responding to an alert . We are running three workdays at different locations. The first will be on Tuesday 17th August starting at 10am at Black Bridge which is a short walk from the Visitor Centre at Hornchurch Country Park parking area\, and bus stops for the 252 from Hornchurch or Elm Park. \nInterested then be sure to email Aisling Woodhead: aisling.woodhead@thameschase.org.uk by the 9th August

SUMMARY:Thames Chase Forest Circle Walk - Section 3
DESCRIPTION:Section 3 – West Horndon Station to North Stifford Bridge\n\n  \nJoin us for the first Forest Circle Walk! This guided walk begins at West Horndon Station and takes us along the River Mardyke to North Stifford Bridge. \n6.5 miles (approx)\, 3.4 hours (approx) \nMardyke River Valley\nThe Mardyke River starts in the Brentwood Hills and runs southwards into the River Thames at Purfleet. It takes its name from the manor of Mardyke that\, in the 14th century\, lay south of Dagenham close to where the river now flows into the Thames. It is thought that the river originally joined the Thames farther east than today. \nThe Mardyke and its changing course has greatly influenced the development of land use through the fens and the settlements of Aveley\, North and South Stifford\, Orsett\, North and South Ockendon and Bulphan. Following the draining of the lake\, the wet woodland was gradually cleared to be used extensively for agriculture. It is also thought that the Mardyke was navigable as far as Bulphan as late as the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries facilitating transportation of crops and grain to the Thames. Some records also indicate that drainage channels were dug to drain the land for grazing pastures. \nThe Mardyke has and still is subject to flooding and was said to be tidal up to and beyond Stifford Bridge as late as 1760. The name ‘Stifford’ is Anglo Saxon stig ford (path that crosses a stream) and other place names such as Ford Place\, Ship Lane\, Stifford Clays\, Fen Lane\, Puddle Dock Farm\, Fen Farm\, etc. give clues to the nature of the landscape of the Mardyke Valley. \n\n\n\nDate\nSaturday 9th October\n\n\nTime\n10:30am-3pm\n\n\nLocation\nStart Point: West Horndon Station\nEnd Point: North Stifford Bridge\n\n\nCost\n£3 Donation\n\n\n\nPublic Transport: \nBuses & Trains to and from start and finish points for the walk:\nWest Horndon:\n– C2C train\n– 565 bus Brentwood to Bulphan (infrequent) \nStifford Bridge:\n– 370 bus Romford to Lakeside via Upminster\n– 22 bus Aveley to Grays via South Ockendon\nand Lakeside \n\nPlease note: \nYou need to choose walks within your capabilities; the walk leaders are experienced but must take your word that you are sufficiently fit for the grade of walk you have chosen. \nWalk leaders will be at the start of the walk regardless of the weather. If you do not give consent to be photographed or filmed please let a member of the team know on the day. \nParticipants under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. \n\nThe concept of the Forest Circle \nSince the Community Forest was first established in 1990\, a main aim has been to promote informal access to all the regenerated areas on foot\, cycle and horse. The vision was to create an improved rights of way network\, particularly footpaths\, designed to meet the needs of residents\, visitors and landowners. \nA strategic network of recreational routes – referred to as Greenways in the Thames Chase Plans –  aims to integrate the safe use of the forest by all local communities and improved connections between public transport networks and the forest’s wide variety of landscapes on foot\, bike and horse\, and to create wildlife corridors remain as important now as it did in 1990.. \nThe concept of the ‘Forest Circle’ was originated as the core of the Greenway network\, comprising approximately……..kilometres encircling and connecting the major areas of the Community Forest. After 30 years of development\, the vision of the Forest Circle has been mapped along 8 linier paths by the Thames Chase Volunteer walks team. \nMany other walking routes have been mapped by the team to create further long distance Greenway routes through and around the Thames Chase area\, along with new circular leisure routes of varying distance. Keeping this strategic network embedded within the green infrastructure policies for the area is a priority for the Trust. \nThe other feature of the Community Forest’s access programme has been the establishment of strategic gateways and hubs that serve the primary road network\, urban areas and link with public transport. These are intended to provide access to the Forest via the Greenways network\, with some providing for public recreation with a car park\, information point\, picnic area or perhaps a visitor centre with catering\, toilets and interpretation. \nIn the longer term\, Thames Chase Trust aims to provide a fully integrated safe system of Greenway links \, hubs and gateways to the landscape whilst maintaining private access rights and linking with  public transport services. \nForest Circle \nThe eight Forest Circle Walks leaflets can be found at the Thames Chase Forest Centre. \nThames Chase Guided Walks and the Forest Circle are in partnership with Land of the Fanns. \nRaising Funds for Thames Chase Trust (Charity Number: 1115627)

DESCRIPTION:Join Thames21 and Land of the Fanns during London Rivers Week 2021* on the celebration of the completion of the Mardyke Valley Habitat Creation and Restoration Project \nThis is an opportunity for the local community\, partners and local council members to visit the completed works at Davy Down riverside park and celebrate the completion of the project. \nThames21 has been entrusted by the Land of the Fanns (LotF) Landscape Partnership Scheme\, financed by the National Lottery Heritage Fund\, to work with partners to develop and implement a freshwater habitat creation and floodplain restoration scheme within the Mardyke Valley. \nThese newly created wetland scrapes will provide food sources and habitat\, improve water quality\, increase flood storage\, and will improve the aesthetics\, creating more opportunities for recreation. \nThe celebration event will provide an opportunity to see and hear about how the project was developed and the main lessons learnt\, as well as to look closely at the benefits of a scheme such as this. DESCRIPTION:This training takes place as part of Land of the Fanns Landscape Champions of Tomorrow. Empowering communities to upskill and take ownership of their local heritage and green spaces. \nIf you run a place that people visit\, such as a country park\, a nature reserve or an historic house\, 2020 and 2021 will have been different and possibly challenging. This workshop will help you look at what has happened and plan a way forward. \nWe will assess and reflect on the experience of Covid on visitors and their behaviour in the Land of the Fanns and elsewhere and consider current and future trends. \nWe hope that the workshop will draw on results of a survey of managed sites in Land of the Fanns (to be carried out in October) as well as information and experiences from other attractions and countryside recreation sites. The detailed programme will depend on the outcomes of the survey. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the next Forest Circle Walk! This guided walk goes through green\, urban and industrial areas of the borough of Thurrock before joining the Thames path.\nPoints of Interest: River Mardyke North Stifford village Chafford Gorges St. Clements Church and conservation area 3 miles of the Thames Path including the ‘Graffiti Wall’ and ‘under the QE2 Bridge’ \nStart: Stifford Bridge 370 bus (Romford to Lakeside) 22 bus (Aveley to Grays Via Lakeside) Car Park at Davy Down (approx 1/4 mile away)\nFinish: Purfleet Station 44 bus to Lakeside (where you can get 370 bus back to Davy Down car park) CTC train (Barking to Grays loop)\nPlease note: No refreshment or toilet facilities on the walk. At the finish there is the Royal Hotel (food\, drinks + toilets) a short walk from Purfleet Station.\nThere are a couple of steep sections. \nChafford Gorges\nFrom the 18th century to the end of 1950s\, a large proportion of Chafford Hundred was extensively quarried for Brickearth to make bricks\, gravel and chalk\, with flint as a side product. These were used to produce lime for mortar\, whitewash and – from the 1870s – cement. The nature park was created within the disused quarries with the Chafford Hundred housing development built around the edges. Much of the area is formed from chalk\, deposited from 97 to 65 million years ago\, at the bottom of a tropical sea\, which was around 300 metres higher than today. \nThere are 5 main areas in the nature park: \n\nWarren Gorge is the largest gorge and at its base there are meadows and lakes – ideal habitats for chalk-loving plants\, kingfishers\, house martins and orchids\nLion Gorge has a large lake containing tench\, rudd\, pike and bream – it is also home to 4 different varities of bat.\nGrays Gorge contains 9 species of orchid and other wild flowers\, along with reptiles such as adders\, slow worms and grass snakes\, as well as species of birds\, butterflies\, bees and beetle\nMill Wood is an ancient woodland that supports a range of wildlife\nWouldham Cliffs form the backbone of the nature park and has views over Lion Gorge – in summer\n\n\n\n\nDate\nSaturday 27th November\n\n\nTime\n10:30am-3pm\n\n\nLocation\nStart Point: North Stifford Bridge\nEnd Point: Purfleet Station\n\n\nCost\n£3 Donation\n\n\n\nPublic Transport: \nBuses & Trains to and from start and finish points for the walk:\nStifford Bridge:\n– 370 bus Romford to Lakeside via Upminster\n– 22 bus Aveley to Grays via South Ockendon and Lakeside\nPurfleet Station:\n– CTC trains (Barking to Grays loop)\n– 44 bus Lakeside to Grays \n\nPlease note: \nYou need to choose walks within your capabilities; the walk leaders are experienced but must take your word that you are sufficiently fit for the grade of walk you have chosen. \nWalk leaders will be at the start of the walk regardless of the weather. If you do not give consent to be photographed or filmed please let a member of the team know on the day. \nParticipants under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. \n\nThe concept of the Forest Circle \nSince the Community Forest was first established in 1990\, a main aim has been to promote informal access to all the regenerated areas on foot\, cycle and horse. The vision was to create an improved rights of way network\, particularly footpaths\, designed to meet the needs of residents\, visitors and landowners. \nA strategic network of recreational routes – referred to as Greenways in the Thames Chase Plans –  aims to integrate the safe use of the forest by all local communities and improved connections between public transport networks and the forest’s wide variety of landscapes on foot\, bike and horse\, and to create wildlife corridors remain as important now as it did in 1990.. \nThe concept of the ‘Forest Circle’ was originated as the core of the Greenway network\, comprising approximately……..kilometres encircling and connecting the major areas of the Community Forest. After 30 years of development\, the vision of the Forest Circle has been mapped along 8 linier paths by the Thames Chase Volunteer walks team. \nMany other walking routes have been mapped by the team to create further long distance Greenway routes through and around the Thames Chase area\, along with new circular leisure routes of varying distance. Keeping this strategic network embedded within the green infrastructure policies for the area is a priority for the Trust. \nThe other feature of the Community Forest’s access programme has been the establishment of strategic gateways and hubs that serve the primary road network\, urban areas and link with public transport. DESCRIPTION:Meeting Point- Eastbrookend Discovery Centre Car Park- RM7 0SS \nJoin Thames21\, LBBD Rangers and Thames Chase Trust in making a difference in your local community by helping us pick litter along the River Rom. We are calling for volunteers of all ages (parental supervision required for under 16’s) to help us to actively improve the river Rom. \nThis is part of the Rewild London funded initiative called The Chase LNR River\, Wetland & Meadow Restoration and Creation Project. \nThames21 has been entrusted by London Borough of Barking and Dagenham funded by the GLA’s Rewild London Fund to deliver a wetland restoration/enhancement strategy for the River Rom floodplain and associated green spaces. This part of the project (Phase 2) has been conceptualised and developed as part of of the Land of the Fanns Partnership Scheme (LotFs). \n \nApart from intercepting and treating pollution\, wetlands have multiple benefits including slowing the flow of flood water thereby helping to protect properties from flooding. By storing water for longer\, wetlands can help to mitigate the impact of droughts\, as they help channel water to underground water supplies (aquifers) – although more research is needed to evidence this. DESCRIPTION:Meeting point: Tyler’s Wood car park\, off Warley Road CM13 3JA\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday 2 July 2022 10.00am\nDistance approx 4.8 miles\n\nThis is a varied walk that takes you across the M25 into Great Warley on the outskirts of Brentwood. We pass through farmland\, lanes and woodland. The church of St Mary the Virgin is going to be open especially for us. This is a Grade 1 listed church building which has a beautiful Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau interior.\n\nThe walk follows the route of leaflet No 14 and additions to the walk and other sites of interest will be suggested on the way.
