SUMMARY:Land of the Fanns Short Film Competition
DESCRIPTION:Are you a budding filmmaker? \nSend us your short film from around the Land of the Fanns  focusing on a local place that is special to you and tell us why. \nEnter our short film competition for amateur filmmakers for your chance to win one of three prizes in vouchers (1st prize £80\, 2nd prize £50\, 3rd prize £20). Films from the competition will be used in Land of the Fanns marketing\, social media and on the website. Films need to be under 2 minutes long and can be in whatever style you like. \nHave you discovered a hidden gem in your local area you may not have visited before lockdown.\nMaybe you’ve taken a regular walk to a local heritage building near your home.\nWhere ever your lockdown travels have been taking you\, we’d love to hear about it.\nAnd lets share our appreciation of what’s around us. \nFilms will be judged in two categories: \n\nAdults and Young People (12+)\nChildren (11 and below)\n\nSend your film(s)\, along with a title\, your name\, address\, telephone number and brief description of what/where your film is of to landofthefanns@thameschase.org.uk by 31 October 2020. \nThe Land of the Fanns is an intricate landscape\, full of surprises and ‘hidden gems’ which straddles the London – Essex boundary and encompasses significant parts of Havering\, Thurrock\, Barking & Dagenham and Brentwood. \nWe are looking for videos which capture the essence of the area – the landscape\, heritage and the community. Most of us now have a very high quality video camera in the form of a mobile phone. Use it (or dedicated camera equipment) to produce your own film. Just make sure it is no longer than 2 minutes in length. The competition is open to all ages and abilities. \nEntry Rules  \n\nEntrants can submit up to 3 films. Age to be advised if under 16.\nCopyright for all films will remain with the respective entrants.\nThe creator should agree\, unconditionally\, that the films submitted may be exhibited and that the Land of the Fanns\, National Lottery Heritage Fund and partners may reproduce any of the films for the purposes of promotion\, marketing\, discussion and education\, including publications\, postcards\, posters\, website\, social media\, etc.\nThe creator is credited for the use of their work.\nA statement must be issued to say that the entry is the creator’s own work.\nEach entry must state when and where the film was taken.\nFilms must be provided as a digital file\, as mp4 and sent as an attachment to landofthefanns@thameschase.org.uk.  If the file is too large to be sent over email\, files up to 2gb can be sent via WeTransfer: wetransfer.com\nYour film must NOT be in breach of any copyright\, including music or sound used in your film. If you need free soundtracks these can be found online for example\, YouTube Audio Library.\nThe film must be suitable for public viewing; i.e. no explicit content.

The ‘Space to Connect’ funding will be used to deliver community workshops to locate and record local heritage sites and valued green spaces\, discuss how best to use them and give them better protection for the future. Space to Connect was launched in June 2019\, at the same time as Co-op’s Endangered Spaces campaign to protect\, support and improve 2\,000 community spaces by 2022. \nThe Land of the Fanns is one of 57 organisations across England to receive a grant from the £1.6 million partnership\, designed to help communities tackle loneliness by improving and protecting local spaces that bring people together. Space to Connect follows commitments made in the Government’s Civil Society and Loneliness Strategies\, published in 2018\, to help create sustainable community hubs and spaces where they are most needed. DESCRIPTION:Enter our photography competition for amateur photographers for your chance to win one of three prizes in vouchers (1st prize £80\, 2nd prize £50\, 3rd prize £20). Pictures from the competition will be used in Land of the Fanns marketing\, social media and on the website. \nSend us your photos from around the Land of the Fanns using ‘Spring’ as your theme. \nSend your photo(s)\, which must be at least 1Mb in size\, along with a title\, brief description\, your name\, address\, telephone number\, the date and location of the photo to landofthefanns@thameschase.org.uk by 31 May 2020. \n  \nThe Land of the Fanns is an intricate landscape\, full of surprises and ‘hidden gems’ which straddles the London – Essex boundary and encompasses significant parts of Havering\, Thurrock\, Barking & Dagenham and Brentwood. \nWe are looking for photographs which capture the essence of the area – the landscape\, heritage and the community. \nPhoto: Mark Tilbury\nJudging Criteria \n\nComposition\nAtmosphere\nOriginality\n\nEntry Rules  \n\nEntrants can submit up to 3 photos per round. Age to be advised if under 16.\nCopyright for all images will remain with the respective entrants.\nThe photographer should agree\, unconditionally\, that the photographs submitted may be exhibited and that the Land of the Fanns\, National Lottery Heritage Fund and partners may reproduce any of the images for the purposes of promotion\, marketing\, discussion and education\, including publications\, postcards\, posters\, the internet\, etc.\nThe photographer will be credited for the use of their work.\nA statement must be issued to say that the entry is the photographer’s own work.\nEach entry must state when and where the photo was taken.\nPhotos can be black and white or colour.\nImages must be provided as a digital file initially\, at least 1Mb in size (if you have a newish phone or camera this should not be a concern). This innovative NFM project is designed to reduce flood risk downstream and is also contributing to national flood management data. \nWe are running two events on Thursday 5th March and Saturday 4th April\, 10am – 2pm. \nIf you are curious about NFM and would like to get involved with other local residents in supporting this project please do join us on either day. \nTogether we will: \n\nwalk the stretch of river to learn about the project and observe how the features called leaky woody dams are functioning\nattach interpretation signs and photo position posts near each dam\nundertake practical work if any of the dams require maintenance\nuse the Slow Flow Catcher app to monitor the impact of the dams\n\nPlease register your interest for this event here so more details can be emailed nearer the time. \nAll equipment will be provided\nPlease wear clothing suitable for being outside for the duration of the event.

Come and join an informal and friendly design session with Kinetika artists. Kinetika is a Purfleet based arts organisation and we are working with Land of the Fanns to deliver a Community Mapping project.  \nWhat next? \nIn March and April 2020 there will be creative workshops in film-making and participants will turn the drawings in to 100 silk flags using Kinetika’s batik process. As part of his River Catchment work at Essex Wildlife Trust he coordinates the Combined Essex Catchment Partnership and is currently working on a fish migration roadmap with the Thames Estuary Partnership\, the Essex beaver release trial and an innovative new eDNA technique for monitoring mammal species in river catchments in conjunction with Salford University. \nIn 2014 he co-authored the Mammals of Essex and was also invited to represent the Wildlife Trusts on the UK Water Vole Steering Group which coordinates the UK response to water vole issues from The Environment Agency\, Natural England\, Scottish Natural Heritage\, Natural Resources Wales\, RSPB\, The Wildlife Trusts and PTES (the People’s Trust for Endangered Species). During this time he helped design the new National Water Vole Monitoring Programme\, supported the publication of the Water Vole Mitigation Handbook and coordinated the catchment scale reintroduction of water voles to the River Stort. In 2016 he was invited to chair the UK Water Vole Steering Group\, taking over the role filled for 20 years by the Environment Agency’s National Biodiversity Manager\, Alastair Driver.

DESCRIPTION:Learn how to translate illustrations into designs suitable for batik.  Help us create a design for each story that will be made into flags! \nWe are inviting local people and communities to identify and celebrate 100 Stories gathered in response to the different Landscape Character Areas within the Land of the Fanns area. \nFavourite memories\, stories or personal connections to spaces or places in the Land of the Fanns area have been captured through writing and drawing workshops and you may have written and illustrated your own story. \nNow it’s time to turn those stories in to designs for silk flags. Come and join an informal and friendly design session with Kinetika artists. Kinetika is a Purfleet based arts organisation and we are working with Land of the Fanns to deliver a Community Mapping project.  \nWhat next? \nIn March and April 2020 there will be creative workshops in film-making and participants will turn the drawings in to 100 silk flags using Kinetika’s batik process. SUMMARY:Natural Flood Management on Rise Park Stream
DESCRIPTION:Thames21 and partners Land of the Fanns have been installing Natural Flood Management (NFM) features on Rise Park Stream in Bedfords Park\, Havering. This innovative NFM project is designed to reduce flood risk downstream and is also contributing to national flood management data. \nWe are running two events on Thursday 5th March and Saturday 4th April\, 10am – 2pm. \nIf you are curious about NFM and would like to get involved with other local residents in supporting this project please do join us on either day. \nTogether we will: \n\nwalk the stretch of river to learn about the project and observe how the features called leaky woody dams are functioning\nattach interpretation signs and photo position posts near each dam\nundertake practical work if any of the dams require maintenance\nuse the Slow Flow Catcher app to monitor the impact of the dams\n\nPlease register your interest for this event here so more details can be emailed nearer the time. \nAll equipment will be provided\nPlease wear clothing suitable for being outside for the duration of the event.
