As part of his River Catchment work at Essex Wildlife Trust he coordinates the Combined Essex Catchment Partnership and is currently working on a fish migration roadmap with the Thames Estuary Partnership\, the Essex beaver release trial and an innovative new eDNA technique for monitoring mammal species in river catchments in conjunction with Salford University. \nIn 2014 he co-authored the Mammals of Essex and was also invited to represent the Wildlife Trusts on the UK Water Vole Steering Group which coordinates the UK response to water vole issues from The Environment Agency\, Natural England\, Scottish Natural Heritage\, Natural Resources Wales\, RSPB\, The Wildlife Trusts and PTES (the People’s Trust for Endangered Species). During this time he helped design the new National Water Vole Monitoring Programme\, supported the publication of the Water Vole Mitigation Handbook and coordinated the catchment scale reintroduction of water voles to the River Stort. In 2016 he was invited to chair the UK Water Vole Steering Group\, taking over the role filled for 20 years by the Environment Agency’s National Biodiversity Manager\, Alastair Driver.

DESCRIPTION:Learn how to translate illustrations into designs suitable for batik.  Help us create a design for each story that will be made into flags! \nWe are inviting local people and communities to identify and celebrate 100 Stories gathered in response to the different Landscape Character Areas within the Land of the Fanns area. \nFavourite memories\, stories or personal connections to spaces or places in the Land of the Fanns area have been captured through writing and drawing workshops and you may have written and illustrated your own story. \nNow it’s time to turn those stories in to designs for silk flags. Come and join an informal and friendly design session with Kinetika artists. Kinetika is a Purfleet based arts organisation and we are working with Land of the Fanns to deliver a Community Mapping project.  \nWhat next? \nIn March and April 2020 there will be creative workshops in film-making and participants will turn the drawings in to 100 silk flags using Kinetika’s batik process. SUMMARY:Natural Flood Management on Rise Park Stream
DESCRIPTION:Thames21 and partners Land of the Fanns have been installing Natural Flood Management (NFM) features on Rise Park Stream in Bedfords Park\, Havering. This innovative NFM project is designed to reduce flood risk downstream and is also contributing to national flood management data. \nWe are running two events on Thursday 5th March and Saturday 4th April\, 10am – 2pm. \nIf you are curious about NFM and would like to get involved with other local residents in supporting this project please do join us on either day. \nTogether we will: \n\nwalk the stretch of river to learn about the project and observe how the features called leaky woody dams are functioning\nattach interpretation signs and photo position posts near each dam\nundertake practical work if any of the dams require maintenance\nuse the Slow Flow Catcher app to monitor the impact of the dams\n\nPlease register your interest for this event here so more details can be emailed nearer the time. \nAll equipment will be provided\nPlease wear clothing suitable for being outside for the duration of the event.

No previous drawing experience is necessary. SUMMARY:Thames Chase Guided Walk - Thorndon Country Park
DESCRIPTION:Join us for some fresh air and enjoy the outdoors on our guided walk around Thorndon Country Park. \nCircular Guided Walk from Thorndon Country Park South via Visitor Centre in North Park – 5 miles \nThe walk begins in Thorndon’s open parkland and passes the site of the Old Thorndon Hall\, up to the remains of the pigeon mound.  The pastures offer great views across the Thames valley and towards London.  The walk then continues through Thorndon North’s beautiful woodland.  There will be a brief stop at the Thorndon Park Visitor’s Centre for facilities and refreshments before returning to the South car park through varied woodland. \nMost of the walk is on paths\, but there are a few steep and muddy places so stout footwear is recommended. \n\n\n\nWhen\nSaturday 30th November 2019\n\n\nTime\n10am-12:30pm\n\n\nLocation\nThorndon Country Park South Car Park \n(Parking charges apply)\n\n\nCost\nDonations welcome (parking charges apply)\n\n\n\nThames Chase Guided Walks are in partnership with Land of the Fanns. \nRaising Funds for Thames Chase Trust (Charity Number: 1115627)

DESCRIPTION:Enter our drawing competition for amateur artists for your chance to win one of three prizes. Drawings from the competition will be used in Land of the Fanns marketing\, social media and website. \nDrawings will be judged in two categories: Adults and Young People (12+)\, Children (11 and below) \nSend us your drawings from around the Land of the Fanns using landscape and / or heritage as your theme. \nSend your drawing(s)\, along with a title\, brief description\, your name\, address\, telephone number and location of the drawing to landofthefanns@thameschase.org.uk by 30 November 2019. \n  \n \n  \n  \nThe Land of the Fanns is an intricate landscape\, full of surprises and ‘hidden gems’ which straddles the London – Essex boundary and encompasses significant parts of Havering\, Thurrock\, Barking & Dagenham and Brentwood. \nWe are looking for drawings which capture the essence of the area – the landscape\, heritage and the community. \n  \nEntry Rules  \n\nEntrants can submit up to 3 drawings per round. Age to be advised if under 16.\nCopyright for all images will remain with the respective entrants.\nThe artist should agree\, unconditionally\, that the drawings submitted may be exhibited and that the Land of the Fanns\, National Lottery Heritage Fund and partners may reproduce any of the images for the purposes of promotion\, marketing\, discussion and education\, including publications\, postcards\, posters\, the internet\, etc.\nThe artist will be credited for the use of their work.\nA statement must be issued to say that the entry is the artist’s own work.\nEach entry must state where the drawing is of.\nDrawings can be black and white or colour and using pen or pencils.\nImages can be provided as a digital file\, at least 1Mb in size to landofthefanns@thameschase.org.uk\, or original copies posted to Land of the Fanns\, Thames Chase Trust\, Broadfields\, Pike Lane\, Upminster\, Essex RM14 3NS.\n\nDrawings: Jo Beal

Look out for more drawing and writing workshops in the new year! \nWe are inviting local people and communities to identify and celebrate 100 Stories gathered in response to the different Landscape Character Areas within the Land of the Fanns area. \nDo you have a favourite memory\, story or personal connection to a space or place in the Land of the Fanns area? \nIf so\, come and share it in an informal and friendly story writing workshop with Ali Pretty\, Artistic Director of renowned arts organisation\, Kinetika\, on: \n\nStory Writing workshop – Great Warley Church Hall – opposite St Mary the Virgin\, Great Warley\nFriday 29th November 2019\n2:00 – 4:30 p.m. \n\nThe workshop will take place in the warmth of the Church Hall but we will have the opportunity to see the beautiful Arts and Craft and Art Nouveau interior of the Grade I listed Church building.  \nKinetika is a Purfleet based arts organisation and we are working with Land of the Fanns to deliver a Community Mapping project.  \nWhat next? \nOnce you’ve written your story or captured your memory\, follow up with a fun and friendly Drawing Workshop to illustrate it.  \nThe drawing workshop is professionally led by Kinetika artist Jo Beal\, who will help you illustrate your story in a simplified and bold way\, so that it is suitable to work as a design for a silk flag. No previous drawing experience is necessary. The drawing workshop is on: \n\nIllustrate Your Story workshop – Great Warley Church Hall – opposite St Mary the Virgin\, Great Warley\nWednesday 4th December 2019\n2:00 – 4:30 p.m.\n\nJo will provide pencils\, pens and paper. We aren’t using paint in these workshops. Bring some water and snacks as not all locations have refreshments available. \nIn 2020: \nIn March and April 2020 there will be creative workshops in film-making and participants will turn the drawings in to 100 silk flags using Kinetika’s batik process. The flags and the sharing of stories will form part of the celebratory Walking Arts Festival planned for May/June 2020. \nWe are collecting stories online too – so please spread the word and ask your friends and families to share their stories. DESCRIPTION:Havering – Bedfords Park and Rise Park\nBedfords Park Walled Garden\, Romford\, RM4 1QL\nMonday 28 October and Tuesday 5 November \nIf you love your local environment and are interested in how the waterways can be improved for wildlife while reducing the risk of flooding\, sign up for our accredited 2-day training. \nThames21 are committed to enabling communities to care for and improve their local waterway. As part of our work to trial natural flood management interventions around London we are providing fully funded\, accredited training to local residents who are keen to learn about how natural flood management functions and to gain the practical skills and confidence to be River Keepers in their own area. \nOn Day 1 you will learn about different natural flood management methods and what type of locations they are suitable for. You will take part in a site visit with the Thames21 or local authority Natural Flood Management Officer for your area and gain experience in using the ‘Slow Flow Catcher App’ to assess locations and monitor natural flood management installations. \nOn Day 2 you will take part in building appropriate natural flood management installations such as woody leaky dams using local materials. You will learn about the process for getting permission from the local authority and Environment Agency to undertake this work and the health and safety considerations of working around watercourses. \nA short assignment accompanies each day of the course in order for you to practice data collection and consider the process for implementing natural flood management in your local area. \nBy the end of the course you will be able to talk to other people in your community about how natural flood management can be implemented in the local area and take part in monitoring its effectiveness at a local scale. \nClick here to sign up to this training programme.

SUMMARY:Community Mapping - Community Assets Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Community Mapping project will identify and celebrate 100 Stories gathered in response to the different Landscape Character Areas within the Land of the Fanns area. Alongside this\, an important part of the project aims to help participants identify local Community Assets and we are pleased to host a meeting on Saturday 26 October at Thames Chase Forest Centre\, 10.00 a.m. – 2.00 p.m. to hear from David Moynihan of Locality. \nLocality is a national charity and membership organisation that believes in the power of community. Their members are community organisations and they support them to be stronger and more successful. \nDavid will be running this workshop session to provide pathways and examples for communities to mobilise to provide stewardship and sustainability of community assets. He will highlight the steps\, tools\, challenges and opportunities and the support that is available to help communities. \nKinetika will also update you on the next phase of the Community Mapping project which involves a programme of dynamic film and audio training workshops\, led by Rosa Productions\, a further set of story-writing workshops\, followed by drawing workshops in November and January/February\, silk flag painting workshops in the spring and plans for the Arts/Walking Festival finale events in May and June 2020 – so lots to look forward to! \nPlease email jo@kinetika.co.uk to reserve your place.

DESCRIPTION:Visit our travelling archaeology exhibition at the Thames Chase apple day on 20 October. \nCome and discover the ‘hidden gems’ that make up your local landscape. The Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) are highlighting the fascinating history\, archaeology and heritage of the area in a travelling exhibition on behalf of the Land of the Fanns Landscape Partnership Scheme. \nThis travelling exhibition is an exciting way of understanding how London once was; historically made up of fens\, forests and farms\, the exhibition highlights how it has developed over the centuries and how the area was significant for the creation of wealth; it’s strategic importance in the world wars and the link to the important trade routes to the Thames. It will show there is a great deal of heritage in the local landscape\, of which there are still remnants that people may not been aware of in their local area. You can even take part in a living history activity as part of the exhibition. \n
