61. Landscape: The Fen Mardyke

Looking across the flat land on a hot July day, this is not my Thames Valley, I was a child 60 years ago and 60 miles to the west amongst the rolling grass of low Berkshire hills, beef cattle, hedges and hay making. Here, the ripening barley and winter wheat fill the horizon between straight dykes, the clay soil baked hard and cracked. And yet this has been home now for over 40 years, the longer the watching, the more it seems right, this small piece of agriculture, flat between the Mardyke and  the Brentwood Hills.
